To ensure overall oral health, missing or damaged teeth need to be replaced or restored by a licensed dentist. At Progressive Oral Surgery & Implantology of Long Island, you will be provided with a personalized treatment plan that is right for you to get your smile back to its best. Read below about some of the procedures we offer.

Wisdom Teeth

The wisdom teeth are the third molars, and they are the last teeth in the mouth that will erupt. The first molars tend to erupt at around six years of age, while the second molars will erupt at around age 12. The wisdom teeth typically erupt at around the age of 18, but for many people, the teeth become impacted and don't actually move out through the gums at all.

Tooth Extractions

A tooth extraction is the procedure done to remove a tooth that is damaged beyond repair from its socket in the jawbone. Extractions are also done to remove wisdom teeth that may be impacted or create future problems.

Bone Grafting

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that is used to fix problems associated with the bone or joints. It involves transplanting bone tissue, and in the field of dentistry, it is most commonly completed so that there is enough bone available to support dental implants.

Jaw Surgery

Orthognathic surgery will be required when your jaws don't meet correctly or if your teeth just don't seem to fit within the jaws. The teeth can be straightened out with orthodontic treatments, but a misaligned jaw will need corrective jaw surgery to repair. Not only does this procedure improve the appearance of the face, but it will help to ensure that your teeth are functioning properly and meeting correctly.

Facial Trauma

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons work to treat a variety of facial injuries. These professionals need to be highly skilled in emergency care, treatment methods for acute injuries, and long-term rehabilitation and reconstruction. While proper treatment is obviously critical for physical reasons, the emotional health of the patient is also at stake after an injury to the face.

Impacted Canines

If your dentist has used the term "impacted" in regards to your canines, you might not be sure what exactly that means. An impacted tooth is one that is "stuck" and unable to erupt through the gums in order to function as intended. This often happens with the third molars, otherwise known as the wisdom teeth.

Oral Pathology

In a healthy mouth, the inner lining will be covered with mucosa, a special type of skin that is smooth and pink. When changes to the appearance of the mucosa are noted, this could be a warning sign that something is going on with the pathology of your mouth, and the most serious concern is oral cancer.

Cleft Lip & Palate

While babies are forming within the womb, a number of bones and tissues have to align for things to join properly. In the case of the mouth, there is a condition that arises when the two palates that make up the roof of the mouth do not align—this is known as a cleft.
