Brushing properly is also important as brushing too hard can be damaging to the gums and teeth. Be gentle but also be thorough and using a soft bristle brush can help with that.
Most people rinse their mouth out after brushing, but this can wash away the fluoride and leave you not getting the full benefits of it. It is best not to rinse, eat, or drink for at least 30 minutes after brushing. However, it is beneficial to rinse your mouth after eating with a mouthwash as this will remove bacteria and any food buildup. Also, if you are a smoker, it is recommended to stop smoking immediately. The CDC says smoking makes a person far more likely to get gum disease.
