The biggest fear that people have when it comes to oral surgery is pain. There are many different types of pain that can happen during any oral surgery procedure, but there are also many ways to deal with that pain. It starts with numbing the oral surgery site. The different options often depend on the type of surgical procedure we do. The Most FamiliarWhen you ask anyone what we use for sedation during any dental procedure, most will talk about getting an injection of Novocain into their gums. It Is often the thought of that needle that keeps people from seeing us when they need help. While an injection is one of the methods, we use to numb any area we are going to work on, there are other options that we can turn to. The best part is that we can often combine different methods to make it even easier to provide the sedation that people need. The Other Options One of the easiest things to relieve some of the pain of the needle is the use of a topical numbing gel. The gel can numb the area before the injection of Novocain to make that less painful. The numbing gel does not alleviate the fear of the sight of the needle. For that there are relaxation techniques that can put a person in a better frame of mind and help them ignore the sights and sounds of our office. Nitrous Oxide or laughing gas is another option. This does not put a person to sleep, but it does put them in a very relaxed state. For people that need more, IV sedation allows the person to sleep through a procedure. They will not feel anything during the procedure and will wake up once it is done. There is no need to worry about the possibility of pain during any oral surgery procedure. There are plenty of ways to make sure everyone is able to get the help they need without the fear of feeling any pain.
