Someone with an overbite may decide they want to do something about it. They may want to improve their smile, or the overbite may cause other problems. If they do decide they want to fix their overbite, they need to look at the options. They need to know if surgery one of the options they have and what does the surgery involve. Knowing these things can help them make a decision about what to do for their overbite.Braces Don't Always Fix the OverbiteEveryone thinks that if they have an overbite, they will need to wear braces. They may expect to wear braces for a few months or a several years, but the expectation is that when the braces are taken off, their bite is completely fixed. They do not think that there is any need for additional work. The problem is that braces do not always fix the overbite entirely. The braces can help move and align the teeth, but they cannot always fix the jaw that is out of alignment. What Surgery Does When a person has an overbite, several things are happening. The teeth may grow in and become misaligned. Some habits can cause the teeth to shift and move. It is also possible that the teeth do not fit in properly as they grow, and this causes them to move as they emerge leading to an overbite. There are also people who have an overbite that results from the position of their jaw. When the upper jaw extends over the bottom teeth, an overbite occurs. This is where surgery can come in. Before getting surgery, braces can make sure the teeth are properly aligned. This process typically takes 12 to 18 months. Once the teeth are straight, surgery can take care of aligning the jaw properly. The result after the surgery is a set of teeth and jaw that are straight and aligned.
