Things We Need to Know Before You Have Any Oral Surgery

Things We Need to Know Before You Have Any Oral SurgeryIf people had their choice, they would never have to undergo any type of oral surgery. Unfortunately for many, that is not the case. While the thought of oral surgery is not always pleasant, there are ways to make the experience more manageable. Planning ahead can turn an unpleasant experience into something that helps you regain your happy smile.

Steps of Preparation
What you need to do often depends on the reason for the oral surgery. Most people are able to plan a little in advance before the oral surgery. These are 6 things that you can do that will make the whole process easier.

•  Ask Questions. The best source for information about what you need to do and what to expect from oral surgery are the dental professionals in our offices. Ask as many questions as you like. Find out what to do before and after the surgery. Ask what to expect during the surgery. Knowledge is a powerful tool to make every procedure easier.
•  Arrange transportation. Some oral surgeries allow you to drive yourself home while others require someone else to drive you home. Make the arrangements ahead of time.
•  Eating. Depending on the type of oral surgery, it is often necessary to fast for as many as 12 hours before the procedure. This is something to plan for ahead of time.
•  Wear comfortable clothes. Think about what you will wear during and after the oral surgery. If you are getting IV sedation, you may want a short sleeve shirt. This also helps if other medical equipment such as blood pressure cuffs are in place.
•  Limit what you bring. Do not bring too many things with you and you may also want some type of container to put things such as valuables or dentures in during the surgery.
•  Don't Rush. Time is a stressor and if you don't provide yourself with ample time it will add to the stress of the oral surgery. Give yourself enough time to relax as much as possible.

Preparing for oral surgery may involve some other things, but the six things listed above can help make the whole process easier. They can remove much of the stress that can make every procedure more difficult.
