![]() Where Oral Cancer OccursCancer can happen anywhere in the body. Oral cancer typically occurs in the lips, gums, tongue, inner lining of the cheeks, roof of the mouth or the floor of the mouth. It is possible for oral cancer to spread to other parts of the mouth and body. There are many different causes for oral cancer. Genetics plays a role, but people who engage in risky behaviors can increase their risk. Smoking, smokeless tobacco, exposure to the sun and STDs all increase the chance of developing oral cancer. The best way to avoid the problems of oral cancer is to catch it early. Signs to Watch For To catch oral cancer in the early stages, it is important to know the signs. If a person engages in any of the things that increase the risk of oral cancer, they should take more care to watch for the signs. The signs of oral cancer include a sore on the mouth or lips that does not heal, white or reddish spots inside of the mouth or a growth or lump inside the mouth. A loose tooth, pain in the mouth or ear and difficulty swallowing are other signs. Seeing the signs of oral cancer does not mean you have oral cancer.
