What Jaw Pain on Only One Side Really Means

Posted on 9/30/2018 by Rodney Rastegar
What Jaw Pain on Only One Side Really MeansBefore we address Unilateral Orofacial Pain, we need to talk a little about what TMJ (temporomandibular joint syndrome) is. TMJ is the inflammation of the jaw bone in the joint where it attaches to your skull. It can be caused by injury, stress, arthritis, teeth grinding, nail biting, gum chewing or misaligned teeth.

It's more common in women between the ages of 18 to 44 and there can also be a genetic predisposition to TMJ. People who are more sensitive to pain and have increased stress responses may also be more susceptible to TMJ. But can you only get it on one side of your jaw? The answer is 'Absolutely!'

Unilateral Orofacial Pain

Facial pain gets our attention fast, anything from throbbing, shooting pain to dull and tender, it's something we should have a look as soon as possible. When the pain is only on one side, it can be mistaken for an earache, a toothache or even a simple headache.

It doesn't mean that you've had an injury to one side of your jaw and not the other, it could simply be that your body holds the stress on one side more than the other. Every person who struggles with TMJ has their own unique symptoms.

If you think you may have TMJ or Unilateral Orofacial Pain, please call our office and come in for a full examination so that we can assess your situation and help you find the best treatment plan.
