Do You Know Why Your Jaw Can Hurt Even Days After an Accident?

You may be wondering why your jaw can hurt even days after a car accident.

Even when the crash is minor, like in a fender-bender, the jaw can be dislocated due to the whiplash effect. It is important that you call us for an examination after a car accident, so we can check you and decide if treatment is needed.

Whiplash happens when the head is thrown backward suddenly or violently and can cause the lower jaw to feel tremendous pressure. It is also possible to suffer an injury to the jaw when your head hits the steering wheel or the back of the seat.

Diagnosing Jaw Pain

When you come in we will run several tests to diagnose your injuries, including examining your bite, watching and listening to your jaw as it opens and closes, and putting pressure on different areas of the head. You may also need to have an MRI of the jaw and X-rays to find what the extent of the injuries are.

After the tests are done, we will suggest the best treatment to help with your jaw pain, which can include massage to the jaw, applying heat or cold compresses, using a mouth guard, and taking anti-inflammatory medications.

What Causes Jaw Pain After an Accident?

It is not uncommon for people to have jaw pain after an accident. In some cases, however, clenching of the teeth or bruxism can be responsible for discomfort in that area. If you have not been diagnosed with bruxism, your pain may not be related to your accident.

Trauma to the head after an accident is common and you should call us as soon as you can to so that we can look you and offer a diagnosis. Many times, jaw pain is related to the clenching or grinding of the teeth, but it's important to check your injuries to start the proper treatment as soon as possible.
