Does Lack of Sleep Affect Your TMD?

Posted on 7/20/2018 by Rodney Rastegar
Does Lack of Sleep Affect Your TMD?A chronic lack of sleep can affect your life in many ways, from being tired, to not having enough energy to enjoy activities with your family, not sleeping well at night is a problem that millions of people in the U.S. suffer from.

Several studies confirm that temporomandibular joint disorder or TMD, has a lot to do with your sleep.

How Does Pain Affect Sleep?

Having a good night sleep for adults can be challenging and if you are in pain it can be even more difficult to find the peace you need to fall and stay asleep every night. This can become a vicious circle if you suffer from TMD. Less sleep can increase the pain, and with more pain there is more sleep deprivation.

You may have TMD without knowing, so it is important to get diagnosed if you regularly suffer from morning headaches, neck or shoulder pain, or jaw pain.

Things You Can do to Sleep Better

Lack of sleep can cause loss of attention and alertness during the day, which, can affect work or school. Getting a good night's sleep will help you cope with the stress, which can contribute to grinding and clenching your teeth at night, one of the most common causes of TMD.

There are some things you can do to help improve your sleep:

•  Relaxation techniques, such as yoga or meditation can help relieve stress and anxiety. If you try to find some time to relax every day or as often as you can, this can greatly help you get a better night's sleep.
•  Exercise can also contribute to having better sleep and improves your physical and mental health. Exercise improves the circulation in your body and this can bring a general feeling of well-being that can help you manage your stress and anxiety.
•  Using a mouth guard at night can help relieve the pain associated with clenching and grinding your teeth that can cause TMD.

The most important thing you can do to improve the quality of your life is to get diagnosed and get treated as soon as possible. Please let us know if you think that you may be suffering from TMD.
